Alienware has released a new 480Hz gaming laptop, the m17 R5, as well as a 480Hz option for the current x17 R2. Both laptops may now be equipped with a 4K display in the US (no word on a UK deployment yet), but the new option of a 1080p panel with a monstrous 480Hz refresh rate is more intriguing.

According to Dell, the increased frame rate will result in smoother animation, reduced latency, and less ghosting. Of course, whether a certain game will be able to take use of that added smoothness is another matter entirely. It will also be determined by the remainder of the laptop’s components. The Alienware m17 R5 & Alienware M15 R7 were the very first gaming laptops we’d seen in a long time that employ AMD CPUs rather than Intel. Alastair Stevenson, our editor, commented that this was an interesting development in the typically boring world of PC gaming.

By terms of capability, the Alienware m17 R5 may be equipped with only an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX chipset and, at the high end, a AMD Radeon RX 6850M XT Graphics. You may also choose between up to 64Gigabytes of Memory and a 4TB SSD. Meanwhile, the new Alienware x17 R2 comes with Intel’s 12th Gen CPUs and can be configured with Nvidia’s RTX 3080 Ti Graphics, up to 64Gb of Memory, and a 4TB SSD.
